🫀 NAFLD Fibrosis Score (NFS)

Predict advanced fibrosis in NAFLD/MASLD with the NAFLD Fibrosis Score (NFS).

NAFLD Fibrosis Score (NFS)

Age (years)
BMI (kg/m²)
Impaired fasting glucose / diabetes
AST (U/L)
ALT (U/L)
Platelets (×10⁹/L)
Albumin (g/dL)

When to use

Identify who needs elastography or hepatology referral in fatty liver disease.

How it works

NFS = −1.675 + 0.037·age + 0.094·BMI + 1.13·(IFG/DM) + 0.99·(AST/ALT) − 0.013·platelets − 0.66·albumin. < −1.455 excludes advanced fibrosis; > 0.676 suggests it.

Key points

  • Two cut-offs create low, indeterminate and high zones.
  • Less accurate under 35 or over 65 years.
  • Combine with FIB-4 and elastography.
