🧪 Corrected Sodium for Hyperglycaemia

Correct measured sodium for hyperglycaemia to reveal the true sodium status.

Corrected Sodium for Hyperglycaemia

Measured sodium (mmol/L)
Glucose (mg/dL)

When to use

Interpret sodium in patients with marked hyperglycaemia (e.g. DKA/HHS).

How it works

Corrected Na = measured Na + 1.6 × (glucose − 100)/100 (mg/dL); the 2.4 factor (Hillier) is often better at glucose > 400.

Key points

  • Hyperglycaemia dilutes serum sodium.
  • Use corrected sodium to judge true hypo-/hypernatraemia.
  • Reassess as glucose falls with treatment.
